What is generative engine optimization (GEO), really?

GEO is the practice of making your site the source AI answers quote. Here is what it is, what it is not, and the work that actually moves the needle.

Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is the work of making a website easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot to understand, trust, and cite. Classic SEO asks, "Will this page rank?" GEO asks, "When someone asks a question, will the answer be built from us?"

GEO is not a new trick. It is old discipline, enforced.

AI answer engines reward the same things good editors always have: a clear claim, specific evidence, and a named author who has done the work. What changed is the penalty for vagueness. A page stuffed with "innovative solutions" gives a language model nothing to quote, so it quotes someone else.

What AI systems appear to favor

Pages that answer one question directly near the top. Headings phrased the way people actually ask. Concrete numbers, places, names, and dates. Consistent facts about your business everywhere they appear: your site, Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles. Structured data (schema.org) that states plainly who you are, what you offer, and where.

A practical GEO checklist

Write a two-sentence answer before you write the article. Put it first. Give every important page a single job. Add Organization, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, Article, and FAQ schema where they honestly apply. Make sure your robots.txt is not blocking the crawlers you want reading you. Keep an up-to-date sitemap. Publish original material: case studies, pricing ranges, process notes. Things only you can say are the things an AI cannot find elsewhere.

How to measure it

There is no single rank to watch. Track branded search growth, referral traffic from AI assistants in analytics, and simply ask the major assistants the questions your clients ask. Note who gets cited. Repeat monthly.

The short version

GEO is SEO with the fluff removed. Be the clearest, most specific, most verifiable answer to a real question, and make that answer easy for machines to read. At Beal Street Media we build that into the structure and the copy from day one, not as an afterthought.
